Brainspotting
Discovered by David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting, or BSP, is an experiential therapy model that harnesses human beings’ innate ability to heal by accessing the natural processing rhythm of the human brain and nervous system. Grand discovered that where we look affects how we feel. By tuning into this connection in the safety of the therapeutic relationship, it is possible to harness this self-healing capacity. In Brainspotting, a person’s brain-body activation around a particular issue is paired with a relevant eye-orienting position called a Brainspot. It is believed that through connecting with these brain spots, we can access neurological systems in our body that hold emotional and/or physical experiences stored as fragmented sensory data and integrate them into narratively stored memory. When this happens successfully, the prior activation eases, and the body returns to homeostasis. As a result, functioning and well-being improve. Brainspotting embraces the uniqueness of each person and the innate wisdom of that person to heal. Neuroscientists report over one quadrillion connections in the human brain, more than the number of known stars in the universe! Brainspotting therapists embrace the wonder and mystery of each human being and work with the individual in the here and now to promote discovery and healing.
Brainspotting is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic techniques and can be particularly effective for treating trauma, anxiety, and other stress-related conditions.
